Back in the day when cars could haul shit and not just trucks.

I think my dad's Olds 98 can embarrass a lot of half ton trucks in the towing department.

Cars still can haul shit, a lot of Muricans just think they can't for some reason.

Is that some kind of Honda? Because the Accord and Civic can only tow about 1000 lbs without trailer brakes according to the internet.

I don't know anything about towing, but that if that camper was fully furnished, it looks like it would be a lot heavier than 1000 lbs.

Euro Honda Civic. That caravan is probably over 2000lbs but it will have brakes.

The same Honda forum that I found said their max towing capacity with trailer brakes is around 2300 lbs, so I that doesn't seem unreasonable.

I was always told it was unsafe to tow more than 80% of a vehicles weight.

The official braked trailer weight for the diesel is 3300lbs, the car weighs around 3000lbs.

According to classicoldsmobile.com, a Vista Cruiser with a 455 can tow 5000 pounds

A 98 is heavier, has a larger wheelbase, and has a stronger frame/axle than a Vista Cruiser so it can probably tow quite a bit with trailer brakes.

Yeah big stuff like that will obviously be able to tow more. Still, people rarely tow more than 3000lbs and there are plenty of modern cars that can tow over 4000. In fact my girlfriends parents 135bhp RAV4 can tow 4500lbs. They used to tow one of these with it...

You won't be going anywhere quick, but I guess you can't complain if it gets the job done.

Something like a RAV4 is more suited to towing than a small sedan though.

I imagine nice modern brakes help quite a bit.

Well you say that but the RAV4 is actually quite unsettled due to the caravan compressing the rear suspension, our Laguna estate is much more composed for towing. We tow something slightly above the Laguna's tow rating but it does the job fine.

To be honest tow ratings aren't something we really look at when buying a car, despite having a caravan. We just make sure it has a decent amount of power and will accept a towbar.

You can't tow with a CAR! Everybody knows you need an SUV!
